We’re Talkin’ About You, Willis!

A Thank-You to the Inventor of the Modern A/C.

Can you believe it’s only been around for almost 120 years? That’s right, back in July of 1902, the air conditioning system as we know it today was invented. If you live here on the Suncoast of Florida, you couldn’t imagine life without it. Thanks to one Dr. Willis H. Carrier, you don’t have to.

Such a cool idea.

Standing on a foggy train platform in Pittsburgh gave Carrier an idea. This later led to the design and development of a contraption to control the humidity at the Sackett & Wilhelms Lithography and Printing Company in Brooklyn, N.Y., enabling the paper used in the printing process to remain a constant dimension. From there he submitted drawings for what became recognized as the world’s first modern air conditioning system.

Carrier’s design operated with the basic principles today’s air conditioners use. It must control temperature and humidity, while circulating air, providing ventilation and filtering dust and particles from inside areas. After several more years of refinement, Carrier was granted a patent for an “apparatus for treating air,” the world’s first spray-type air conditioner. It functioned as a humidifier/dehumidifier by heating water for humidification and cooling it for dehumidification.

In great company.

In late 1914, Willis Carrier, along with other engineers, formed a company that would launch the entire air conditioning service industry – the Carrier Engineering Corporation. Among the earliest adopters of Carrier’s cool innovation was the film industry, using air conditioning to stabilize humidity and therefore prevent those ever-present white specks from developing on film reels. That’s not all. The film industry was forever changed when in 1925 Carrier cooled the Rivoli Theatre in New York. This move vastly increased ticket sales during summers – a traditionally slow season. Oh, it also had a major hand in creating the “summer blockbuster.”

A/C finds a home.

The convenience and comfort of having air conditioning in homes didn’t really begin until 1926, when Carrier introduced the first home A/C system. Since then, the application of air conditioning has become widespread – especially here in Florida. Today, Willis Carrier is known as the “Father of Air Conditioning” and Carrier, his namesake company, is one of the most recognized and respected names when it comes to HVAC systems.
