Last month we were hopeful. We discussed how the average lifespan of a standard air-conditioning system in Florida is a bit lower than those in other states because of our climate and heavy A/C usage. But, we noted, by taking the right steps – including regular maintenance – you can prolong the life of your air conditioner and get more years of its cooling capabilities.

This month we are realistic.

SweatWhen we invest in something as significant as a car or an air conditioner, we hope it will be everlasting. Unfortunately, like your car, air conditioning systems are simply not built to last forever – even with regular maintenance and top-notch care. So, just like when your car lets you know its driving days are numbered, your A/C will give you some signs that it has reached its life expectancy and it is time to start shopping for a new one. The longer you wait, the worst it will get. You don’t want to have to endure a summer of sweating and sweltering inside your comfort zone because your air conditioner isn’t doing its job.

Here are 5 warning signs indicating your A/C is losing its cool:

  1. Wallet Woes – Raising Energy Bills
    Maintaining low energy is important to anyone with a budget to maintain. If you notice increasing energy bill costs, it could be due to parts in your A/C wearing down and affecting its efficiency. As a unit ages, the harder it works to cool the home, increasing A/C costs along the way.
  2. Make Some Noise! – Strange Noises
    Summertime in Florida is always accompanied by the familiar hum of air conditioners doing their thing. If you start hearing unidentified noises coming from the A/C unit that you have never heard before, it could be a sign that a problem exists and needs to be found. From loose components to compressor failure, there are many A/C issues that can result in noises of various sorts.
  3. Run, Forrest, Run! – Runs Continuously
    If your A/C runs continuously and you’re just feeling warmish air from the vents, it’s probably time to replace the system. You can call a professional to check the refrigerant charge, clean coils and perform a few other repairs, but it also may be the system is just wearing out. If the problem is not addressed, you’ll probably be facing the death of your A/C system soon enough.

So, when it comes to repair or replace, consider what it costs you to have your air conditioner constantly repaired versus just replacing it altogether.
  5. Not Like A Fine Wine – Age
    As we mentioned above, your A/C is not going to live forever. If your unit is more than 10-15 years old, it may be worn out and ready for replacement. Although we know you want it to last as long as possible, you should be aware that modern air conditioners are much more efficient than those manufactured 10-15 years ago, and when you replace your old model, you’ll reap the benefits from lower utility bills.

Great business and professionalism. Called prior to arrival which helped die to my work schedule. After having my AC shutoff for 2 days and another company didn’t do anything for me other than tell me i needed new coils.
